Uyuni - a trip to heaven
Im sitting at a internetcafe waiting for getting on my bus to la Paz. We just ate lunch at a restaurant here in town. We ordered the menu for today so first we got sallad and bread, then rice soup with potato and meat, then spaghetti with salsa and meat and then vanilla pudding for dessert. All this cost us 10 bolivianos whis is like 10 swedish crowns!!
the last 3 days have been AMAZING! I just had to tell you that...!
we went from la serena, the party town where noone could find the party. And from there up to San Pedro the Atacama. We met 2 girls from england on the bus and spent an hour walking around trying to find a good cheap hostel but in the end we were back were we started and decided to stay there.
4 in the morning the next day we went to Tatio Geysers to watch the sunrise, all the geysers and to swim in the hot thermas, it was great! Im not sure what kind of energy we used to survive the rest of the day but first we were planning on doing sandboarding and see the sunset and all these things San Pedro is offering you. But it never happened... so after doing nothing all day except walking around trying to change money and book the uyuni tour, we bought some mango sour and went to our hostel totally overtired and had a fun time there instead.
Now to the amazing uyuni tour! I will problably never ever in my life experience something that cool again!
It was THE tour! We stratedin a bumpy white minivan, untill we came to the bolivian border. There we got to throw all our backpacks on the roof of an jeep and strat our journey. We were a really fun gang in our jeep. It was me from stockholm, johanna from gotland, a girl from england, one boy from france, one from belgium and one from brazil. We had tons of fun!
We saw green lagunes, red lagunes, falmingos and dessert and dessert and mountains and more lagunes. We went to geysers 5200 meters above sea level and it was snowing! The Braziliean guy in our jeep just started to dance and jump around, halleluja moment! It was the second time in his life he saw snow. We stoped for lunch and dipped our feets in the hot thermals.
That was just the first day. We stayed ina very basic hostel in the middle of the dessert. It didn’t have any showers and the toilets were filled with poop, but at least there were some beds and million of stars outside the window! You can really see the milkyway from here, and it is like a 100 times more stars here than it is in sweden.
Everyone in my room went to bed at 20.40!! it was impossible for me to sleep that early..! so after freezing my ass off under the stars I went to bed, under my 5 blankets, and listened to music, thank you Emelie, you’re the best!
The second day we had to drive a lot! And it had been raining so it was like driving in a muddy lake. So we were sitting there, listening to the soundtrack of uyuni, titanic in techno version, eating lollipops with bubbelgum and just wondered how the heck he knew where he was driving. Our car broke down a couple of times but our good driver managed to fix it every time! But there were times I thought I never was going to see “land” again. And I don’t know why, but the driver must have loved driving in the water because if there was a dry path and one filled with water he would definetly go for the one with all the water! First we thought it was because he didn’t want to get stuck in the mud so it was better to go where it was water because then you know its good enough to keep the water from sinking but then a car passed us and everytime the other car avoid the water, our went for a swim. After a while you could really hear how the engine was flooded with water and I think it was a miracle we made it all the way to uyuni!
After swimming in the mud for some hours we took a road called tum-tum. It got its name bacause the entire car and everything in it just went tum-tum, bumping around on all the rocks.
We stopped in a little town called San Juan. Our driver really wanted to stay there, I think he had a lovr there or something. But after som deliciuos 100% coffe with bolivian milk powder we kept going towards the salt hotel.
Finally we came to the salt hotel in the salt dessert, salar de uyun. In the salt hotel everything was made from salt. The floor, the table with chaits, the beds, evverything! it was really cool!
The next morning we were supposed to look at the sunrse but it was cloudy so we slept a little bit longer instead. At first it was just all white and covered with water in the salt desset. But then when the sun found its way through all the clouds it was like driving in heaven. Everything reflected so it looked like you were driving on the clouds, and when other cars passed by it looked like they were flying. It was soo cool! Totally amazing! We stopped at an island, filled with giant cactus and took really SWEET picture! When Im in santiago and have a faster computer I will definetly upload them. I cant describe with words.. you should have been there!
We danced around in heaven for a while just enjoying life.. it was amazing!
Everything was very high above sea level so it was a little bit har to get used to at first. We got a little bit dizzy sometimes and it was a pain in the ass to walk around. You got exhausted after 10 meters.
Our driver was good, he didn’t fell asleep, we never saw him drinking vodka. He also had a girl named Jovanna who cooked for us. We liked her even though she ate all our food. Good thiing we had the brasiliean cookie king. He didnt give up untill y ou ate his cookie =) it was great! I miss them already!
The only problem we have had here in uyuni is to get away from here! We wanetd to go to Potosi and the silver mine but they didnt have any tickets today.. so then we were thinking of going to oruru, but no luck there either. everyone just wants to get out of here. so in the end we just wanted to get somewhere! finally we booked a ticket to la paz, a night bus, even though they are strongly not recomended because they say its dangerous. We just want to get as far away from this place as we can right now so we have a lovely 16 hours bus drive to La Paz to look forward too this friday night! lovely! it will probably take even longer because its rainy season so the roads are very bad and muddy...
I'll let you know how it was when i arrive to La Paz, if I arrive... if not?
